Non-CS Transfers to CS Department

If you are currently a graduate student at IU-Bloomington and want to transfer to the CS department, you will need to:

• notify the CS graduate office
• submit an updated statement of purpose
• submit updated letters of recommendation
• submit an Application for Transfer of Department Within the Graduate School. Applications can be picked up from the CS graduate secretary or from the Graduate School, Kirkwood Hall 111

Note that you are expected to have proven your ability to carry out graduate studies in CS by completing at least two of the core 500 or 600-level courses. These are courses with a B or P prefix, and this does not include the A-courses for nonmajors. Your application will be considered in competition with other new applicants to CS, so you need to provide evidence that you are capable of graduate work in CS. Your letters of recommendation should include some from computer scientists, particularly members of the graduate faculty (versus the teaching faculty) in Computer Science if you have had courses from them. Not all three letters need to be from such faculty, but at least one should be if at all possible.
