BACHELOR of ARTS DEGREE in COMPUTER SCIENCE

2008-2010 - Administered by the College of Arts and Sciences

These requirements are derived from the 2008/2010 College of Arts and Sciences Bulletin but are presented in a different format to aid understanding. It is possible to fulfill multiple requirements with one course. (i.e., One course may fulfill an Arts & Humanities, a Culture Studies, and the Intensive Writing requirement.)

122 total credit hours (NOTE: No more than 42 credit hours of Computer Science may be counted in this 122 credit hours minimum.)

36 hours at the 300-level or above

Cumulative GPA and major GPA (grade point average) must be 2.000 or higher. No grade below C- may be used to fulfill major or minor requirements.

PART II: COMPUTER SCIENCE MAJOR AREA REQUIREMENTS

A. CORE COURSES

(Honors (H) classes are often offered in the core courses.)

B. MATHEMATICS REQUIREMENTS

____ , ____ , ____ Math M211 or equivalent proficiency. One foundations course and one mathematical science course, or two mathematical science courses out of Mathematics M212, M213, M301, M303, M311, M312, M343, M348, M365, M371, M384, M391, M405, or M409, or Philosophy P251, P350, or P352. Mathematics courses cross listed with CS and taken to satisfy a CS requirement are excluded.

Foundations Courses: Computer Science courses B401, B403, and P415.

C. ADVANCED COURSES

____ , ____ Two additional advanced Computer Science courses. Three Computer Science A290 topics courses may count as one of these additional courses. At least one advanced course must be at the 400 level. The phrase "advanced Computer Science courses" refers to Computer Science courses labeled B, C, H, and P (of at least 3 credit hours), numbered 300 or higher; Y399 taken for a least 3 credit hours; Y499 leading to an honors thesis; and Mathematics M471 and M472.

HONORS PROGRAM FOR THE BACHELOR OF ARTS DEGREE

General Requirements:

Students must satisfy the requirements for the B.A. in Computer Science and the following additional requirements.

Major Area Additional Requirements:

1. GPA of at least 3.300 in Computer Science courses. Cumulative GPA of at least 3.300.

2. Computer Science courses must include at least 11 credit hours of honors courses (H courses or Y499).

3. Advanced Computer Science courses must include at least one of the following:

   (a) Y499, leading to an honors thesis

   (b) a "programming-in-the-large" (P) course

   (c) a graduate-level Computer Science course (500 level or above)
