CSG FAQ

Q: How can I create a mail alias for a mailing list?

If you need to create a mailing list that only you will use, you will probably just want to use the alias or addressbook feature of the mail program you are using. Please consult the documentation for the particular mail client you use (ie. pine, thunderbird, outlook, etc) for more information.

If you need to create a mailing list that will be used by a group of people you have these options:

  1. LISTSERV - IU uses the LISTSERV system to manage mailing lists. This is a very feature-rich system that lets you manage lists and message archives. To get started with this system see the IU Knowledge Base article that answers the question At IU, how do I request a new LISTSERV list?.

  2. addalias - The addalias command is available on the CS systems, which is very simple but lacks many of the features you may want such as allowing users to automatically subscribe/unsubscribe, moderation, digest, archiving, and a host of other useful features. If you want some or all of these feature, you will instead want to use a LISTSERV or mailman list.

To get started with addalias please see the addalias man page which can be viewed on any of the CS systems by running man addalias.

  3. mailman - The CS department manages a mailman server. To get started with mailman, please see the Using Mailman Page.
