December 1998 System Update Information
- We are planning various network upgrades over the holiday break.
Most system disruptions will occur on December 28th and 29th. If
you are planning to use CS computers on either of these days, please
be aware that you may experience network outages and server reboots.
- The two new color printers, ps3 in LH301 and ps10 in LH428, are both
up and in service. In addition, ps10 has an additional paper tray
for use with transparency film. To use it, just load your film in
the lower paper try and print to ps10transparency.
- We are happy to announce the availability of Star Office on the
CS Suns. Star Office is a complete office suite that can import
and export files to and from the file formats used by Microsoft
Office. If you have used office suites from Corel or Microsoft,
you will probably find Star Office to be similar to those packages.
Please see the
Star Office Setup Guide for information about how to get started.
- Several new software packages and upgrades of existing packages
have been installed recently. These include the latest Java3D,
Standard ML, Python, and Cooledit. Please see the
software database for a list of currently installed software
and pointers to documentation.
- Hi-Resolution Projector - We now have a new
1024x768 portable LCD projector that can be used with any Sun, SGI,
or PC in the building for presentations.
New Projects and Updates
- Networking - The complete rewiring of Lindley Hall is about
85% completed. The only areas left to be wired are the main office
areas on the 2nd floor and parts of the 201 suite. We hope to have
all machines using the new ethernet
switches and ATM backbone connections by January 1999.
- Wireless Network - Lindley Hall is now completely covered
by a wireless network. If you have a notebook computer and you
want to get "connected" to this network, please let us know.
- Window NT Terminal Server - The new NT Terminal Server hardware is
up and running Citrix MetaFrame and is undergoing testing by CSG staff.
With this server, you will have access to a whole
suite of Windows applications from your Unix or Mac workstation. This
server will be available to all CS faculty, staff, and graduate students.
We hope to deploy this server for general use in January 1999.
- Remote Access - We have new hardware to replace the CS netblazer
that supports ISDN and 56K/V.90. We have started the migration of users
to the new hardware and hope to complete this transition by early 1999.
Note that the CS dialup services are for CS faculty and staff only.
- C335/Multimedia lab - We are in the process of constructing a
new lab of PCs in LH035 that will support the new multimedia class
during the second half of the Spring 1999 semester. This lab will
also be used to support C335 during the Fall 1999 semester and will
replace the current custom 68030 machines.
