August 2005 - Account Changes and Transition to LDAP

During August 2005 we made a transition to a new account management system based on LDAP and Kerberos. Here are some of the changes that have resulted:

  1. Important Note for New Accounts - The account creation system used by the CS department is no longer tied to the IU/UITS account creation system. As a result, you will no longer need to go to the IU account system to create your CS accounts. Once accounts are authorized (for example, by virtue of being a new graduate student or by taking a class using CS systems) your account will be created and be ready for use immediately.

Please note that new accounts will be created without a local CS password by default. Authentication will be done using the IU Kerberos server so you can login using your normal IU Network ID username and password. If you would prefer to create a local password, you just need to change your password using the Account Management Page. Please see the associated FAQ for details on how to access the Account Management Page.

  2. Unified Account Information - Previously, you could have a different password on each of the separate local password domains (ie. the Burrow, Sharkestra, Moose, Extreme, OSL). Under the new system, you have one password for all local systems and have a single web interface to change your password, shell, and account information. See the associated FAQ for details on how to access the Account Management Page.

If you have multiple accounts, we selected your password based on a precedence ordering of those accounts. For example, if you have a Shark and Burrow account, your password was taken from your Shark account. So, if you have trouble logging into a CS system during this transition you may need to try another password you were using on the CS systems.

  3. Kerberos Authentication - You can now login to any of the CS systems using your IU/UITS Network ID (aka. Kerberos) password as well as your local CS/LDAP password. When new accounts are created, they will not have a local password inititally, so users will login using their Network ID password. You can now also access your email remotely using IMAP or POP using your IU Kerberos password.
