November 12, 2003 - Sun Web Browser Changes
There have been some upgrades of the web browser programs available on the
CS/Extreme/OSL Sun Solaris workstations. These updates include the following:
- Mozilla Upgrade - The Mozilla browser has been upgraded from version 1.3 to
version 1.5. You can envoke Mozilla by simply running mozilla from any
shell prompt. If you want to run the older 1.3 version, it will remain available
as /l/mozilla-1.3/mozilla.
- Opera Upgrade - The Opera browser has been upgraded from version 5.0-b1 to
version 7.21. You can envoke Opera by simply running opera from any
shell prompt. If you want to run the older 5.0-b1 version, it will remain
available for a short time as /l/opera-5.0-b1/bin/opera.iucs.
- Mozilla Firebird Installed - Version 0.6 of the Mozilla Firebird browser is
now available. You can envoke Firebird by simply running firebird from
any shell prompt. This browser used to be named Phoenix. If you want to run
the older 0.5 version of Phoenix, you can run /l/phoenix/phoenix.
- Netscape 7 - Netscape version 7.0 continues to be available on the Suns.
You can envoke Netscape 7 by simply running netscape7 from any shell
prompt. The older Netscape version 6 is also available and can be envoked
by running netscape6.
- Netscape 4.x - Netscape version 4.79 remains the default version of the
Netscape browser installed on the Suns and can be envoked by simply running
netscape from any shell prompt. This is an older, but faster, version
of Netscape. If you are looking for a more modern browser than Netscape 4.x
but have been disappointed by the slow performance of Netscape 7 and Mozilla,
you may want to check out Mozilla Firebird since it rivals Netscape 4.x in
terms of speed.
